The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has once again highlighted the struggles faced by trans people, and has advised on, and called for, improvements in its latest update: The struggle of trans and gender-diverse persons.
In 2019, an important step was taken to remove the mental illness classification for transgender people. In its place, the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) created the sexual health category of ‘Gender Incongruence’.
The OHCHR has advised States to ‘give access to good-quality health-care services and health-related information to trans persons and consider establishing the provision of gender-affirming care as a State obligation not dependent on a diagnosis.’
At GenderGP, we wholeheartedly support this approach. We proudly affirm all trans people, regardless of age and identity. We understand that someone’s gender journey is unique to them and can be ever-changing. We call for timely support and safe healthcare for all and continue to campaign for others to do the same.
