Jackie Swarbrick

Title:
Registered Counselling Psychotherapist
Pronouns:
She/Her

Jackie has significant personal experience of gender diversity. Her first husband came out as trans and transitioned during the course of their relationship. This experience introduced her to the emotional and practical complexities of transition. Jackie soon became aware of the lack of support available, especially for partners and parents. This fact has been a strong driver for Jackie and motivates her work to this day. Jackie’s second husband is bi-gender and together they founded, and run, a registered charity, Safe Haven, which provides support to the transgender community in Cornwall.

Jackie facilitates support groups for transgender adults, their partners and family members, and gender questioning teenagers. She is also qualified to deliver education and training on gender diversity and awareness. Jackie is an Independent Advisor with the Devon & Cornwall Police Diversity team.

Before qualifying as a counsellor and psychotherapist, Jackie worked for Social Services for 15 years, using her person-centred approach to help young people in long-term foster care make sense of their lives and move forward in a positive way. During this time she undertook a lot of training in working with people on the Autistic Spectrum and this gives her a deep understanding of neuro diversity and its correlation with gender identity. Jackie has a down to earth, non-judgemental ethos which she finds encourages people to explore their thoughts and feelings honestly, no matter what they bring to the session.

He/Him

Ireland based James is a qualified counsellor and psychotherapist. Prior to psychotherapy, James’ educational background was in nursing, addiction and homeless services. He worked with NGO’s and state agencies in various roles from 2011 until 2018 before moving into psychotherapy practice full-time.

James believes that there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to therapy and works with his clients to achieve their desired outcomes and goals, whatever they may be. He is trained in and works through an ‘integrative approach’, meaning he draws on several schools of therapy. He views presenting issues through a variety of lenses, which allows for more flexibility.

James provides affirming counselling services to members of the transgender and non binary communities and is a member of the World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH). This allows him to keep informed of the most up to date research in transgender healthcare.

James adopts the informed consent approach to working with clients and applies the concept of ‘you are, trans enough’ to his work. He also provides support and counselling for family members and loved ones of those who are on their gender journey. James has in-depth experience of working with adults and adolescents who have ADHD and Autism.

In supporting clients, James spends time working on coping strategies and skills improvement. He adopts the ‘Don’t try harder, try different’ approach. He also provides ongoing support for parents and loved ones of neurodiverse clients. James is currently accepting clients aged 12 and up.

James can provide general counselling services in addition to his specialist interest areas of gender, sexuality and neurodiversity.

Tilly has been a qualified counsellor since 1986 so her involvement with sexual and gender diversity started well before words like ‘gay’ or ‘trans’ were used or widely understood. She has a wealth of experience as a GSRD (Gender, Sexuality and Relationship Diversities) Therapist which she brings to the GenderGP family. She initially worked with survivors of child sexual abuse but her energy and commitment to therapy-for-all took her on a path of continuous professional development.

She has had a diverse career. This has included supporting offenders and addicts in prison and working as a Needs Assessor for the Open University.

Trained as a person-centred counsellor, Tilly has, over the years, combined this work with research into autism, dyslexia, speech and language, and mental health. She believes that understanding these conditions and the associated difficulties has complemented her holistic approach as a counsellor and therapist.

Tilly continues in private practice but the primary focus of her work now is in relationships, gender and sexual diversity.
