COVID-19 – How we can help

Alternative medications so your care can continue during lockdown

Continuing your care during the coronavirus lockdown

As the country enters into lockdown, many trans people will understandably be concerned about how they are going to navigate the next few weeks, on both a psychological and a practical level.

We know that NHS appointments for trans patients have been suspended, in many cases indefinitely, and we understand that the implications of this are significant.

Our objective at GenderGP is to make life easier for trans people. So we have looked at some of the key issues our community is currently facing. Here is an overview of some of the solutions we have put in place to help.

One particular challenge currently facing the trans community comes in the form of having injections administered, for either blockers or testosterone. If patients are unable to visit their GP for their regular shot, how will they continue with their treatment regime?

We have been looking at alternative solutions, including using a nasal spray instead of the blocker injections and using testosterone gels to replace testosterone injections.

Nasal Spray Blockers

In the UK, most blockers are given by injection, either monthly or three-monthly. However, in other countries, other methods of delivery are used – such as implants (a small pellet placed under the skin), and nasal sprays.

A nasal spray is given twice a day, with a blood test being carried out after four weeks to ensure that hormones are being suppressed. Three-monthly blood testing, then enables us to monitor that they are working effectively.

The nasal spray can also be used to help trans masculine patients whose oestrogen levels are reluctant to come down, or in patients whose bleeding continues to be troublesome.

As remote healthcare becomes a necessity during this period of social isolation and quarantine, we wanted to offer our patients, and the community, a solution to the current challenge they face. Nasal sprays are a viable alternative to the injections we have become used to. They are cheaper than injections and can be self-administered.

If you would like to try a nasal spray to suppress your natural hormone production, as an alternative to your usual injectable blocker, please contact a member of the GenderGP team via your account in Portal. If you are a new patient please email: info@GenderGP.com.

Testosterone Gel

For those patients who are struggling to get their testosterone injections, we can prescribe testosterone daily gel from our partner online pharmacy so that your treatment is not interrupted: https://www.gendergp.com/about/partners/.

Blood Tests

Blood tests are an important aspect of your care. However, we understand that you may struggle to get your blood tests done via your normal route – whether as a result of self isolation, or GP surgeries being closed. We are able to arrange for blood tests to be done privately, through our partner laboratory TDL https://www.gendergp.com/about/partners/

They will supply you with a finger-prick testing kit which will be sent to you in the post. This is the route many of our patients already take. This video provides a guide on how to carry out the finger prick test at home: https://youtu.be/tgQg2wRdg7A

Remote Access

As a remote service, we are well placed to continue to serve our current and new patients, whilst measures for isolation and social distancing are in place. If you, or someone you know, is in need of counselling, diagnosis, medication or support then please contact us.

Alternatively you can book a session with one of our counsellors here: https://www.gendergp.com/booking/. Our team is standing by to help.

New Patients

If you are a new patient and already have reports or assessments from the NHS then these can be used to achieve a swift enrollment onto our GenderGP Appraisal Pathway: https://www.gendergp.com/how-does-gendergp-work/

Our community members access their information via their own personal dashboard, the GenderGP Portal. This is an incredibly secure system that allows users to have a complete overview of their care, all in one place. For more information visit: https://www.gendergp.com/ggp-portal/
