Recent World events have revealed the very worst in people but, as is often the case, these events also provide the opportunity for the very best in human nature to shine through. The outpouring of support and love in the marches held to promote the #blacklivesmatter campaign, show us that when we come together and make it clear that we will not stand for discrimination, that is when we can make a real difference.
This sentiment is particularly relevant in this most celebrated of months for the LGBT community. While Prides may have been mothballed for this year, we mustn’t lose the essence of what they represent. To me they are a manifestation of freedom. A glimpse of a world where we are all accepted for who we are, without fear or hatred.
So, while we may not be able to step outside and come together, I want to take this opportunity to rally the troops. I want to call out to every trans individual, every gender questioning person, and anyone who loves and supports the community – whether openly or not – to stand up with Pride.
Shout it from the rooftops that we will embrace the colour and variety that is reflected throughout our tiny but mighty community and we will ask for everything, because that is what we deserve.
To all those organisations who, around about now, would have been applying the finishing touches to their banners, flags and flyers, soaking up a little of the “halo effect” of associating with us at this time of year – to all those allies who would have spent a small fortune on weekends away and elaborate costumes – I urge you to redirect those budgets into one of the thousands of crowdfunders out there that make such a huge difference to trans individuals looking to access gender affirming surgery, campaigning for real change or even trying to pay their legal fees.
For those who are feeling low, I want you to know that you are not alone. There are millions of people out there who see you, who respect you and who want you to thrive, however, you may choose to live your life.
Let’s not let a little thing like lockdown stand in our way. Repeat after me:
We are PROUD
We stand TOGETHER
We are LOVED
